window girl in red light districtHi , I have a story I would like to share with you. I am 32 years old, making a living in South Africa. I was born in South Africa and grew up there. I visited Amsterdam in March 2008 and after reading a lot of articles on Amsterdam, I wanted to make the experience worth while. I spent the first day in my hotel room and main shopping area. The second day I spent in the shopping area as well and the evening I visited the red light district. What can I say. I have always told myself I would never pay for sex, But I have always lived with the intention to always be able to say in anything that can be done. "I DID THAT, I HAVE EXPERIENCED THAT"

amsterdam red light districtThe most striking visual aspect of the Red Light District is probably the windows. You feel like you're walking down Fifth Avenue in New York, except that in the windows you don't see Gucci bags and Hermes scarves.

You see girls. There are the fat ones and the skinny ones and the Eastern European ones and the Asian ones and the old ones and the "barely legal" ones. One woman was bent over touching her toes, while her rear end--apparently her special feature--protruded in the window.

A trip to the Red Light District...

Girl in window brothelTo a lot of people who haven't been there, Amsterdam is synonymous with coffee houses legally selling drugs and red light district. I was naively expecting an ultra-liberal society with this forwardness showing on streets. My first 5 minute walk in the Dam area didn't disappoint me - I came across more buildings with titles beginning with "sex" than I can hope to anywhere in a US. So, my first long chat with a local Amsterdammer disappointed me - I realized that she (and most Dutch people in general) have similar priorities in life than any of us, and don't even notice or think about things that grabs the attention of tourists!

I landed on Friday evening keen on seeing things I had heard or read about (no, I don't the pun here--its not my fault that "red" and past tense "read" are homophones).
